I don't have any problems with "typographics quotes" on Konqueror:

I also use sid, XFree 4.3 from experimental and KDE 3.1.4 from KDE_3_1_BRANCH, 
and to me Qt 3.2 is a lot better with fonts than 3.1.

I haven't seen this squares since XFree 4.1.0 on KDE almost, Ricardo do you 
can reproduce the same with other fonts?

And in respect to LD_BIND_NOW and the accented chars to me only affects when I 
try to type an accented char not for displaying them on a page.
But I suspect that the bad interaction with LD_BIND_NOW is due to the recent 
XFree 4.3 from experimental.
