icons on the desktop

Hello all,

another thing i'm trying to learn:

I can place icons on the desktop to start with on click my application.
With the help of konqueror i'm able to drag(?) such an icon on
the desktop and create my link.

Question: How can i have "my" Icon instead of the konqueror "shell"
for this purpose?

Example: How can i place the OpenOffice-gulls-icon
on the desktop and have OpenOffice starting when i click on it?

With the kde-menueditor i can only see, the icon is there,
but not drag as from konqueror :(

Where is the doc i did not find?
