I did this, after removing gs-aladdin-vflib, as well as the ms mincho
& gothic fonts. Basically good news: it works. ありがとう！I can print.
Printing the 'subject' line of Japanese e-mail messages from Mozilla
still produces squares, but I now think this is probably a mozilla
bug (or does anyone get better results?)
Other good news: in Openoffice the Japanese font names (東風明朝 etc.) are
properly displayed in the font list; and the kinput2 conversion label
in Openoffice shows an あ (previously it was ?? in Openoffice). BTW
why is 東風 pronounced 'kochi'?
The bad news was: I could not input Japanese anymore in mozilla after
switching from the Microsoft kanji fonts to the kochi ones. When mozilla
started up in a Japanese environment (LANG=ja_JP mozilla) I got warnings
like 'Gdk warning: missing charsets in FontSet Creation' . Mozilla
started, but I could not start the Japanese conversion system with
shift-space.
This symptom could be cured by removing the truetype FontPaths
(/usr/share/fonts/truetype as well as the defoma paths) from my
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4. I still get truetype fonts, even antialiased, in
Mozilla. which is somewhat unexpected. But no Gdk warnings, and Japanese
conversion just works. Unfortunately as a results of my experiments
the Japanese font names in Openoffice have become blocks.
