Personally, I would try the debian binary packages first and try to tweak 
server variables if performance is an issue.  Just the number of databases 
(700) shouldn't require that you compile against the patched libpthread.

I'm familiar with the section of the MySQL manual that you're referring to 
and in fact this is noted as a bug in the mysql-server package.

If I ever get time, I was hoping to try to come up with a patched
mysql-server package for that bug and submit it to Christian.
