It only "just works" like that if the organisation has chosen not to use
DHCPv6

However, SLAAC doesn't support dynamic DNS updates as far as I know. 
Windows is also using DHCPv6 for obtaining DNS servers.  That leaves me
feeling that many people will choose the DHCPv6 route and Debian will
need to work easily in those environments.

Many users have a requirement for hostnames from dynamic DNS.  e.g. many
companies put a hostname sticker on their PCs and when somebody rings
the helpdesk, they give the hostname and the support engineer can make a
remote connection to the desktop.  There are other things like backup
scripts that depend on hostnames.
