Well, citing from it, it ain't so easy: (La)TeX does not hyphenate words that already contain explicit hyphen characters (except just after the hyphen), ... To enable hyphenation despite this, a command of the form: \DeclareFontFamily{T1}{cmr}{\hyphenchar\font=127} "moves" the hyphen char away from "-" and thus enables hyphenation also at additional places. Sorry, no examples and no time to learn the build system to see if this is a viable option.
