It's simple. Just put into hyphenation.tex all hyphenations as you allow these.
If you want avoid hyphenation of sarge put "sarge" into the file. If you allow
hyphenation after sa and also after sarg put "sa-rg-e". This will result in
either
"sarge",
"sa-
 rge",
or 
"sarg-"
 e"

If the word for which you want to correct the hyphenation contains a hyphen
(such as "apt-file"): forget it, I don't know a solution to avoid the break
or even to correct further possible breaks (such as apt-fi-le). 

In the past I read Donald Knuth's The TeXBook but I forgot already most
of it's content :-(
