cross-install problems (again)

this is the 2nd time that I try to run cross-install under a debian 2.1.
but dpkg gave me unusual errors again. in my install.log there are a lot of
errors like this one:

-----------
dpkg-deb: building package `ae' in `temp_build/ae.deb'.
dpkg - warning, overriding problem because --force enabled:
package architecture (hurd-i386) does not match system (i386)
Selecting previously deselected package ae.
(Reading database ... 0 files and directories currently installed.)
-----------

it seems to me that someone told that the third line is due to some bug...
anyway, cross-install also prints these errors on console:

---------------
dpkg did return unusual messages, please investigate:

dpkg: error processing temp_build/hurd.deb (--unpack):
trying to overwrite `/etc/motd', which is also in package base-files
dpkg-deb: subprocess paste killed by signal (Broken pipe)
Errors were encountered while processing:
temp_build/hurd.deb
---------------

the error about /etc/motd was there also during the first installation. i'm
not sure about the other.
