That's what I had vaguely recalled, and was thinking about, though I
don't have a reference to that claim.  As fairly useless anecdotal
evidence, I remember the HP/UX 'ansi C compiler' building smaller and
seemingly-faster binaries than gcc[1] on 10.20 or 11.0 ...
