If you are new to Linux, then I strongly recommend that you DON'T start with the
PA-RISC port. While the kernel is indeed quite good, there are still several
unresolved issues that severely limit the variety of available software and
their stability, compared to established architectures such as i386 or SPARC -
not to mention that the installation process might be more than you bargained
for on some computer configurations.

IMHO, you should first try installing Debian on some common i386-based hardware
(e.g. anything from 386 to Pentium) and become intimately familiar with that. By
the time you know your way around that setup, the first "official" release of
Linux PA-RISC as a part of Debian 3.0 (Woody) should have hit the street and
offer an easier installation process and a better selection of software.

Of course, if you prefer learning things "the hard way" then, by all means, give
the PA-RISC port a try right away. ;-)
