It could. I can pretty-much guarantee that you are the first person in
the world to test static compilation with the emdebian ia64
cross-compiler. So it may always have been broken. I'm afraid I have
no idea where to look for fixes, but if you find out what the problem
is do send in the info, and preferably a patch. I wonder if static
linking works on other emdebian cross-toolchains? Is it arch-specific,
gcc-version-specific?

Yes, we don't use it much, but it should work...
