I know that quite often it is a difficult decision, whether or not to
remove a package from testing. Also, I don't accuse anyone for mistakes.

My whole point is:

Packages *temporarily* removed from testing and thus making testing less
usable *IMHO* is not a good idea.

However, packages removed from testing, because there is little or no
chance to get them in releasable shape is a very good idea.

A priori it is difficult to predict whether package x belongs to option
1 or 2. From some mails of members of the release team, however, I got
the impression that they don't care too much about erring on the side of
removing too many packages and I don't think that *this* is good for the
users of testing.

Another case at point is ntp. If the release managers are serious that
they believe ntp should be removed for good, than it's removal is a good
thing (and I'd have to look for alternatives). If they hope that it will
get in shape in time, then I think it wasn't a good decision to remove
it. (As far as I can tell, the bug that prevents sid's version
transition to testing also affects etch [1,2]. So people upgrading from
etch at least don't get into a worse position. )
Note, that the upstream bugs, quoted by the debian bug [2] have been
fixed [3] for ntp's present release candidate [4].

To make things clear: I believe that as a whole the developers and the
release managers do an *excellent* job and I thank them for their big
efforts. Thank you soooooo much!!!!!

Debian rocks! Resistance is futile! ;-)

I never meant to rant. Sorry if I offended anyone.
I am not a programmer, but I try to help debian as much as I can (with
my admittedly rather limited means).

Cheers,
Johannes
