That's not fully true. You have to show your passport to the *first* country of that area you get into, from there on, you don't (since there is no customs borders between countries there). So, if you get to Europe through France, you have to show your passports in France's airport but then you don't have to if you travel with a car through Germany, the Netherlands, Italy or Spain.
