f-prot-installer downloads both the scanner engine as well as virus definitions from the vendor's FTP site. However, if they decide to change FTP location, the layout of their tarballs or their own update script, the installer will break. Would this warrant an update to stable?

For me this looks if this way of getting updates (e.g. download from internet) is somehow not suitable for a large enterprise roll-out where some machines might not even have access to the public internet. There should be a different standard debian way to allow our users to update their stable boxes!

May be, but, alas, given the license terms, Debian cannot distribute f-prot. The installer package is just a workaround for this legal obstacle. If there was something like a production quality Free virus scanner, it would not be necessary.

BTW: The installer package also allows installing from a local file.

Thanks,

Johannes
