Even without the input of these people you could still write up a
summary of the proposed alternatives and the pros/cons of each one.
This could be of assistance when somebody asks "why don't we do it
this why?" You can just point to the summary.
Similarly, if/when the people involved get time you can point them to
the summary.
I think it would be considerable quicker looking at a summary rather
then an reading a long thread on this mailing list.
The only problem might be keeping the summary unbiased...
