Well, the last thing we want is you packaging it, then surrendering
in a couple of months and leaving the package orphaned. Either do
it and stick with it during your entire time as a Debian developer,
or let it be.

mplayer does automatic CPU detection, so that problem is gone.
Moreover, having Windows Media support in there is not going to
screw with the rest of the functionality, even if WMV support is not
optimised.

Aside, I beg to differ: I refuse to watch WMV files. The chief
reason for my love to mplayer ranges from MPG via OGM to DVD.

Wrong. You'd be making use of the DPKG database, which, if you ever
administered more than one system, is an invaluable tool!

Fact is, mplayer should be packaged for Debian. Let's here the
devoted step forward and take it on!
