I personally append ".bam.1" to the end of version numbers of packages
I packport for my private archive.
If the package is intended for Debian stable (eg. a security fix), then
I append ".woody.1" instead.
That way my versions take priority against the Debian version, unless
my version becomes old, in which case I have to recompile the latest
version for woody.
