Mail is besser suited for that. You don't need that "real-time" aspect
that IM has over mail, neither the interactive aspect and you don't have
"online-status" and such stuff for these either.
You don't get these on IRC either, do you? And IRC has been around for
long: if this would give much benefits, someone would have written a bot
on IRC for this.

Most of which could better be done via CGIs or Mail.
