update-alternatives and shared libraries

Is using update-alternatives for shared libraries safe?

dpkg makes sure that symlinks get unpacked first in order to minimize
breakage during upgrades (although I can't remember the reason why this
is important right now).

Will this be a problem for update-alternatives?

I am not yet convinced that update-alternatives will help in this
situation (especially since there seem to be conflicting requirements
from everybody), but it might help in other problems I have encountered.
