I wasn't; the machine has a Geforce 2 MX, so it only worked with the VGA16
X server with xfree86 3.x... however, that did appear to work as far as
XF86Setup went, IIRC.

Then howcome apt didn't complain about unmet dependencies? Almost all the
X stuff was loaded, and X tried to start but failed to find "fixed",
so surely something in there should have depended on xfonts-base (or an
alternative)?

The upgrade was messy, I grant you, but I thought apt usually complains
every time you try to use it if there are unmet dependencies anywhere on
the system.

Oh, while I'm here, & just to be different, thanks for doing a bloody good
job of a bloody awkward set of packages (and sometimes a bloody awkward set
of users, too).
