I think that's rather harsh. I'm running both Debian and unstable as a 
learning experience, to find out about these kind of problems as they happen. 
I didn't know about init=/bin/sh, and although I knew about boot parameters I 
never would have guessed to set init to /bin/sh in a million years if I 
hadn't read it in the archives. I also had to hunt through the raw text of 
the mount manpage to figure out how to remount with write capability. 

I know I'm not the only one who has to rely on the list to find out things 
like init=/bin/sh, and many of those who are running a non-unstable version 
of Debian would most certaintly have to do the same. Granted, running sid 
does require a fair amount of knowledge for when things go wrong (like where 
to look for the man pages for instance) but ignorance of one of the billions 
of myriad features of Debian does not invalidate someone's ability to run the 
system, especially when it's something as stable as the login breaks 
mysteriously.

That said, thanks to Sam for the quick fix.
