In other words, replace all files of a package and dpkg considers that it
has 'disappeared', I believe?

It didn't remove itself in its postinst. It scheduled a background process
to run as soon as the dpkg lock was removed, and that process did a purge on
the package.

I don't recall which package it was, though.
