See http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-jr for our goals.

I think producing something our children can use by the time Woody is
released is a very modest goal and quite achievable. In fact, many of us
are already using Debian with our children. All we are trying to do is
make it a bit easier to set things up for them, populating the system with
more things with child appeal, and organizing it in a way that is both
appealing to and usable by children.

We're not aiming at uneducated parents. We're assuming that children who
use Debian have sys admins who are already comfortable with Debian. This
project has grown up out of a natural desire of those who use and develop
Debian to share it with the children in their lives. It has not been born
out of a desire to see Debian on the desktops of every child in the world.
Debian Jr. will not be an "electronic babysitter" that you sit your
children in front of when you don't want to take care of them. If you
want that, buy a TV.

Using Debian Jr. with children will always be a highly interactive
experience, involving all the creativity and familiarity both with the
needs of the users and the care and feeding of the system that a systems
administrator should possess.
