I can almost guarantee that the protocol will change during the 2.4.* kernels.
And I can also tell you that there is a backpatch for the 2.2.x kernels.  LVM
0.8.1 and LVM 0.9 work with both 2.2.x and 2.4.x. 

Also, it doesn't make sense to name it by the protocol IMHO because that's not what people who know LVM identify it by.  I think it would be best to name the packages by the version of LVM you are running.

Have y'all looked at the LVM page recently?  (http://www.sistina.com/lvm/)  Or the ftp site?  (ftp://ftp.sistina.com/pub/LVM/)  The patches there are clearly marked for the versions of the linux kernel they work with.
