That shouldn't have affected the build process.
All you've done with that is effectively prevented your package from
ever being ported to the other architectures.  Was that your intention?
I.e., does it do funky stuff such as use intel assembler source code? If
not, please consider that your package may be useful for people on other
architectures such as alpha, sparc, ...  and change the arch back to any.

What's wrong with the recommended procedure, i.e. using
dpkg-buildpackage?
