I think gpm keeps its hands off the mouse while the console is in
graphics mode, which it checks for with the KDGETMODE ioctl. Perhaps
it's a video mode issue stopping gpm and X coexisting. For what it's
worth they work for me with a PS/2 mouse and an old SVGA (xserver-svga
3.3.5-2, gpm 1.17.8-12).
