You might want to check out a book titled
Linux Application Development
by Michael K. Johnson and Erik W. Troan
(~500 pages, Addison-Wesley)
It came out in early 1998, and covers the kernel 2.0.30 and libc5 environment.
There's lots of positive commentary on it at amazon.com,
but I'd be curious to know what people on this list think of it.
