Agreed. And the time the beam needs to jump to the beginning of next line
and to the beginning of the screen, so you can reasonable adjust the
position of the screen automatically.

I don't know. Well, I do. They don't want to confuse the user. They think if
they hide information, they help. In some way, they are right. However, not
including at least one page of technical data in the manual is pure eveil
and a sin. For example, the SB 32 card did ship with over hundred pages
manuals how to click the close button, but not one single piece of valuable
information about sound font banks etc. *sigh*

I have played with the though to write a modeline editor myself, just as
you. Maybe at some day either of us (= people who think of writing a
modeline editor) will just do it. If I ever come around, would you mind me
contacting you?
