This is not quite true. If you look at for example SuSE, you will find that
a lot of packages are badly maintained and quite old. Don't be blinded by
kernel version number and other mainstream things. Even a Debian stable
version is very current when it is current. It is not bleeding edge, but
stable and up to date.
For a developer, everything is old very soon. This is not how a user
anticipates things (or should anticipate them).
