However, Avery does have a point.  Yes, the diligent user will carefully
read all the relevant documentation.  The *kernel* documentation.  He has
Linus' words in front of him.  Why would it occur to him to look for
special Debian instructions?  And why would he not put his new kernel in
/usr/src?  That is what the kernel docs say to do, and to him it is
logical: this is the core of Linux, after all, not some random program
pulled off sunsite.

Should we be startled when the user thinks of Linus as the vendor?  This is
Linux, not Solaris.  Isn't there some way we can live with kernels in
/usr/src?
