I am quite sucessfully using lprng to spool data to a remote print queue
and into a printer port using a single queue - yes it does filter.

For a printer port:

hplj4000n:HP Laserjet 4000 N:\
        :lp=/dev/lp1:sd=/var/spool/lpd/hplj4000n:\
        :sh:pw#80:pl#66:px#1440:mx#0:\
        :if=/etc/magicfilter/ps-hplj-filter:\
        :af=/var/log/lp-acct:lf=/var/log/lp-errs:

For a remote queue:

hplj4000n:HP Laserjet 4000 N:\
        :lp=hplj4000n@localhost:sd=/var/spool/lpd/hplj4000n:\
        :bq=raw@hp4000n.priv.deltatee.com:\
        :sh:pw#80:pl#66:px#1440:mx#0:\
        :if=/etc/magicfilter/ps-hplj-filter:\
        :af=/var/log/lp-acct:lf=/var/log/lp-errs:

If you are spooling for a laserjet like I am then there is a way to spool
directly into a tcp port on the laser with lp=host@port, I forget what
port to use though.
