dpkg-source (and build) problems - known issue?

I have been having a dpkg-buildpackage problem...now tonight I
was trying to unpack some source (to re-aply a patch I made at work
to sigrot)

Here is what happens:
[sjc@Hal sigrot]$ pwd
/home/sjc/src/sigrot
[sjc@Hal sigrot]$ ls
sigrot_1.1-2.diff.gz sigrot_1.1-2.dsc sigrot_1.1.orig.tar.gz
[sjc@Hal sigrot]$ dpkg-source -x sigrot_1.1-2.dsc
no utmp entry available, using value of LOGNAME ("sjc") at
/usr/lib/dpkg/controllib.pl line 24.
dpkg-source: extracting sigrot in sigrot-1.1
dpkg-source: failure: Unable to rename
sigrot-1.1.orig.tmp-nest/sigrot-1.1.orig to
sigrot-1.1.orig.tmp-nest/sigrot-1.1.orig: Device or resource busy
----
but...
[sjc@Hal sigrot]$ cd /tmp/sigrot
[sjc@Hal sigrot]$ ls
sigrot_1.1-2.diff.gz sigrot_1.1-2.dsc sigrot_1.1.orig.tar.gz
[sjc@Hal sigrot]$ dpkg-source -x sigrot_1.1-2.dsc
no utmp entry available, using value of LOGNAME ("sjc") at
/usr/lib/dpkg/controllib.pl line 24.
dpkg-source: extracting sigrot in sigrot-1.1
[sjc@Hal sigrot]$ ls
sigrot-1.1 sigrot_1.1-2.dsc
sigrot_1.1-2.diff.gz sigrot_1.1.orig.tar.gz

-------
also...[sjc@Hal sigrot]$ df
Filesystem 1024-blocks Used Available Capacity Mounted on
/dev/hda1 2915904 2076796 688313 75% /
Shit-Box:/home 3981748 832874 2942842 22% /home

-----
with /home being a NFS mount...could that do it?
Is there a fix?

any ideas apeciated
