I think one of the considerations was that one already has a
rescue disk, and that was enough of a workaround to make size
consideration no longer outweigh the benefits.
However, having statically linked binaries may allow remote
recovery, when one does not have physical access to the machine.
On the gripping hand, fakeroot would work less well if things
were all statically linked.
Personally, I like the current status, but I do have physical
access to my machine.
