If `strip' is causing problems, it may be safer to use `strip
--strip-debug'.  That would get you most of the size benefits without
mauling code/data.

I may be totally wrong too, and there may be a more fundamental problem
with strip and the ELF unexec(?) approach the `emacs' binary takes.
