When the LILO prompt appears, press CTRL, and then type the name of the
kernel, and a "-s" to boot into single user mode.

Should normally go like this:

* boot

* "LILO" appears on screen; user hits the CTRL key.

* user types the name of the kernel, and the runlevel. For single user mode,
  and the usual setup, type:

  linux -s

  ..and press enter.
