Well, on my intel machines, at the lilo prompt you type 'linux single'.  I
think you can do basically the same thing from the rescue disks.  Different
architectures will use different methods, of course.  My alpha needs me to
type 'boot root=/dev/sda2 single' at the milo prompt.

If you're using a kernel dd'd onto a floppy you're out of luck, of course.
