It was my understanding that contrib was for packages that are "free
enough" for the main distribution, but depend on something outside main
for either their operation or construction. (often a non-free package,
but I think obsolete package dependence is equivalent in this case)

I don't consider this "dumping". It looks more like "providing" to me.

The solution is to create a "looped" file system of about 200 meg and
install 1.1, or 1.2 on that file system. You should then be able to chroot
to that file system and build the packages. I will attempt it this
weekend, as I have plenty of space on my root file system.

Even under those conditions, I would consider it a candidate for contrib,
as it depends on a previous system configuration, no longer possible with
packages from main. (I am assuming that the source format could be
repaired at that point?)
