Re: Fwd: HAMM FREEZE (removed packages)

I have examined this list, and I hope Brian doesn't mind, but I've
second-guessed a number of these decisions.

I've been working my way through the list, and find that most or
nearly most of the removed packages have been removed because of a
Lintian bug `md5sums-lists-nonexisting-file'.

I think this bug should not be `Severity: important', as the existence
or contents of the md5sums file is not mandated by policy.

Here is my categorisation of these packages. For each package I list
the name, code letters for any observations I wish to make about it, a
proposed course of action, and any relevant bug numbers. Each bug
number may be followed by a number indicating that it's a particular
kind of Lintian bug.

I propose to do the following: I shall discuss the md5sums bug on
debian-policy, and if there is consensus I will automatically generate
a control@bugs message to change the severity of all of these bugs to
Normal.

With respect to other bugs I invite discussion or comment, or Brian to
act if he agrees.

I - a Linux distribution without this package is incomplete.
N - there were no outstanding bugs >= important
T - the bug in question is trivial to fix
S - the bug in question should not be severity important
F - the bug in question has been fixed and closed
B - the distribution would be better off with the package (even
    broken)
W - package has been withdrawn
E - the distribution would be better off with the package broken but
    in extra
M - package has many bugs
C - package has problematic copyright or some such
? - not a package name
.../... - more than one bug

- - it is OK for the package to be removed
* - the package should be reinstated immediately
@ - the package should be reinstated and made extra
+ - the package should be reinstated if it has not already been
$ - the package is in the wrong distribution and should be moved
