As long as it comes with the correct default configuration, the change
should be unnoticable to people who don't mess with the configuration
files.

Hmm, I've had wonderful experiences with it.  I love being able to
adjust the semantics of authentication without recompiling everything
(like disabling the securetty stuff). It's definitely on my list of
Debian shortcomings.
