I agree that some better documentation would help. I think it should
start with a simple explanation of shared libraries (use, creation,
naming, etc.). I have a rough draft, but it really needs to be
combined with the Debian specific discussion you ask for, and put in
some public place for comment and correction. Would the New
Developer's Packaging Guide (or whatever it is called by now) be the
right place for this? In the mean time, you can look at the draft at
