run printig manual :
/usr/sbin/deskjet-filter < file.whatever > test.out
cat test.out > /dev/lp1

this way you see if it is lpd.
the next step is : call gs on your own.
maybe gs doesn't work.

i had problems with gs, but mine was core dumping, and not printing
anything ...
