Problems with Pioneer DR-A24X ATAPI CD-ROM drive

Dear sirs,

I can't get my Pioneer 24X ATAPI CD-ROM working under Linux.

After mounting the CD-ROM with:

mount -t iso9660 /dev/hdb /mnt/cdrom

I get the following error messages:

hdb: irq timeout: status=0x51
hdb: irq timeout: error=0x60
hdb: irq timeout: status=0x50
hdb: ATAPI reset complete
hdb: irq timeout: status=0x50
hdb: irq timeout: status=0x50

end_request: I/O error, dev 03:40, sector 0
hdb: irq timeout: status=0x50
hdb: irq timeout: status=0x50

hdb: ATAPI reset complete
hdb: irq timeout: status=0x50
hdb: irq timeout: status=0x50

And so on...

The system is using Debian 1.3.1, and the CD-ROM is a PIONEER DR-A24X
ATAPI. I'm using kernel version 2.0.30 with support for ATAPI CD-ROMs and
the iso9660 filesystem (I've also tried the 2.1.56 without any
difference). The mainboard is ASUS TX97-XE (with Intel's 430TX chipset),
and I'm using the built-in IDE-controller for the CD-ROM. I have
configured the device as primary slave (tried secondary slave/master also
- the same problem). Otherwise the system is a standard PC-system.

The CD-ROM works fine under MS-DOS/Win95, and the CDs I have tried with
the drive does not use the RockRidge extension.

Here's a excerpt from the kernel startup:

hda: QUANTUM FIREBALL ST6.4A, 6149MB w/81kB Cache, LBA, CHS=784/255/63
hdb: Pioneer CD-ROM ATAPI Model DR-A24X 0101, ATAPI CDROM drive
ide0 at 0x1f0-0x1f7,0x3f6 on irq 14
ide1 at 0x170-0x177,0x376 on irq 15

Here's a dump of what the /proc/pci says:

Bus 0, device 1, function 1:
IDE interface: Intel Unknown device (rev 1).
      Vendor id=8086. Device id=7111.
Medium devsel. Fast back-to-back capable. Master Capable.
Latency=32.

      I/O at 0xe000.

The partition table is as follows:

        hda1 FAT-16 1 GB
        hda2 Extended 4 GB
        hda3 Linux Native 1 GB
        hda5 FAT-16 1 GB
        hda6 FAT-16 1 GB
        hda7 FAT-16 1 GB
        hda8 FAT-16 1 GB

It does use LBA mode, and it is on the primary IDE channel. I use a boot
manager on the MBR (System Commander).

I've tried to move the CDROM drive to the secondary channel both as slave
and master, but it doesn't seem to work. I get the same error messages.
I also changed the IDE-cable several times without any difference.
According to my knowledge LBA and other ATA modes have absolutly no effect
on ATAPI cdrom drives. I know it isn't anything wrong with my drive since
I've tried several other CD-ROM drives of the same model as mine.

Hope to hear from you soon, thanks in advance.
