There is no need actually for dpkg on other systems than Debian for
manually unpacking or transforming via alien any *.deb archive. It is
far simpler packaged than *.rpm and can be manipulated by using "ar",
which is a standard program on most Unices. It even works here on
HP-UX-10.20 where i can unpack any *.deb with "ar -x package.deb" and
extract from it the usual "control.tar.gz" and "data.tar.gz", which
can be handled as expected by its suffixes.
