It occurs to me as strange that noone in this debate had mentioned the
transname patch, available in the 2.1 sources. It was developed as a
solution to exactly the same problem Vadim describes.
Please read /path_to_kernel-2.1_source/Documentation/transname.txt
I then suggest to mount /usr and /etc from the central server. /etc could
overmount an existing /etc with a minimum of files in it needed while /usr
is not reachable.
