A brief word of warning... (I tried CVS on dpkg a while back)
The natural CVS model is to name the directory for the package,
for example .../dpkg/ and relegate the version numbers to tags.
At least one package (dpkg) uses its directory name in such a way
that when the directory is .../dpkg/ the build fails, while it
works when the directory is a versioned one, .../dpkg-1.2.3/.
