renaming the tarfile isn't enough -- it needs to *contain* paths that
have .orig on them...

What I usually do is:
-- get foo-$n.tar.gz, unpack it
-- cp -a foo-$n foo-$n.orig
-- delete foo-$n.tar.gz, let dpkg-buildpackage deal with the directories
   directly...
