Ok, I can reproduce the problem with the tar file you sent.  I cannot reproduce
it with a tar file that I create here.  This appears to be a problem in tar,
not a problem in the debianization, or in our shared libs.

I'll spend a little time in gdb and see if I can get a useful backtrace (I'm
having very little luck with gdb right now, not sure why).  If so, and it's
obvious what's wrong, I'll fix it.  If not, I'll forward it to the upstream
maintainer.
