If it's just the dependency I've been told about, it simply means that we
fix the xlib package to provide elf-x11r6lib, and fix the client packages
later. Or, we create a stub package that provides elf-x11r6lib and depends
on xlib6. Are there other problems I haven't been told about?

Indeed. However, if they are security bugs at least we'll be able to get
them fixed.

It would hurt our reputation a lot more than slipping a release date.
We can't knowingly release a system with a security bug. Ever.
