This sounds like a good idea.

Um, this is _not_ what the Solaris team uses to produce the
Solaris distribution. They have version control for a version
release with package version info, and versions for the versions,
and patch revisions, etc. Its very simple to mimic a system
installation under solaris by matching th release version and the
install profile, then accounting for miscellaneous package/patch
differences. Sun is _very_ compartmentalized these days. Almost
to the point that it scares me.

Sonds like we need a QA department ;) I think the package
dependencies actually take care of this. Most people don't
really understand what a powerful package format debian has
developed. I think the "recompile the whole distribution with a
single command" thing would be cool to have because it kind of a
sexy feature these days. But I don't think it adds any more
integrity than the current package system.
