Upgrading R6 testing.

I have been trying to work out the upgrade procedure for moving an R6
system to 1.1. I put my old R6 system back onto a free partition and got
it working (sort of). I had some problems with the boot up stalling if my
1.1 partition is in fstab, so I removed it, and the system boots fine.
The reason I mention this, is that it is this drive that has the 1.1
packages on it. After bootup, I seem to be able to mount this drive
manualy, but when I tried to install dpkg-1.1.3.deb the installation went
to completion (setting up dpkg....done) but hung the machine before
returning the prompt. I could not switch consoles and had to reboot. The
R6 system will no longer boot up. I don't think that this is related
directly to the installation of dpkg. I have another drive coming in
today that I will swap for the drive currently holding R6 and try again.

One question that comes to mind: The kernel for the R6 machine has the
elf support as a module as well as the a.out support. I realize that the
kernel will have to be rebuilt with elf built in. I was hoping that I
could put that off until I could compile the 1.1 kernel. Memory says that
the 1.2.13 kernel doesn't support built in ELF. Is this true? Is there
enough in the base package to build the new kernel, assuming I can
install the base?

TIA,

Dwarf
